| Ginny and Tom Bellamy moved to Morris from Frankfort where they were very active in the Frankfort Garden Club. After they built their home in Morris and started their landscaping, Ginny began looking for a local garden club, which she didn't find. She soon joined the Grundy County Historical Society, Morris Watercolor Guild, Nettle Creek Watershed Conservancy, became involved in several local government and civic projects, and has since become a Master Gardener. But, she still felt the need for a local garden club. So, she asked around to many of her friends to see if anyone else would be interested. Ginny set up the first meeting in April of 2005 and thirty people showing interest in a garden club showed up to discuss the prospective club. Officers were elected, (with Ginny becoming our first president), the title of Morris Area Garden Club was decided upon, by-laws were established and adopted, and the club was officially formed. Today, MAGC has 70 active members. MAGC helps maintain the gardens at the Morris Area Public Library and the Historical Society's information Caboose and sponsors the annual garden walk, tea and MAGC flower show. We've adopted a stretch of highway on Rt. 47 between Airport Rd. and Saratoga School. We support the University of Illinois Extension - Grundy County and WE CARE of Grundy County. We've established a scholarship for an area graduating high school senior that has chosen a career in the field of horticulture/agriculture. We have also established a scholarship to be awarded in the fall of each year to an area adult participating in the Master Gardener Program. MAGC is a not-for-profit organization. Since that first meeting, men and women, whose gardening experience range from novice to advanced, come to learn more about a variety of subjects and we have four Master Gardeners within the group eager to help you with your gardening questions. So, you need not possess the proverbial "green thumb" to join. Regardless of experience, we all have a love of gardening and look forward to sharing it with you and encourage you to come to a meeting to find out more and see what we’re all about. Each month we have a short business meeting, followed by a great program lead by gardening, floral, bird, butterfly, water garden, etc. experts when you'll hear gardener- friendly advice on a variety of subjects, including nature, the environment, horticulture, flower arranging, and planning, planting and maintaining your garden. Field trips to outstanding gardens, nurseries and/or members' private gardens occur from May through August. We have both male and female members, so spouses and/or significant others, a parent/older child or a sibling are welcome. They take advantage of the family rate. Annual membership dues are only $20.00 for a single membership and $25.00 for a couple and are due in January of each year. Dues are pro-rated in October. A Morris residency is not a requirement. Membership includes: An annual subscription to The Latest Dirt newsletter (exclusive to MAGC members) and access to the Members Only page on the MAGC web site. Free gardening advice and tips. |
| Dear Morris Area Garden Club Members and Friends: First of all, thank you for accepting me as 2011-2012 President. I am excited at the prospect of getting to spend more time with gardeners and talking about gardening this year. Now that my little twins are toddling around, I think we will get out of doors a little more than in the past couple of years! A little bit about me: I live in rural, westerly Grundy County with my husband, Randal, and our two year old twins, Helen and David. I am a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Honig-Bell here in Morris. We also have a home building company and sell lots in Nettle Creek Country Club Estates. My garden has been a little bit neglected the past couple years while Helen and David have been blooming! 2011 will be the year my garden is recovered...you heard me say it! I have been a member of the MAGC for a few years now. My mother-in- law, Esther Ritke, asked me to join with her and I am so glad that she did. It has been really enjoyable to slow down the *busy* and come to MAGC, have a cookie (or two) and listen to the garden tips and tales. This year, I would really like to see us grow our membership. It would seem that in this charming, beautiful, rural area where we live, we should have more interest. Shouldn't we? I know that people are busy. Believe me, I know busy, but with our fabulous garden walks, and the great programs that we have been having, this little club is just waiting to be discovered. We have begun to have a radio spot on WCSJ. You can hear about gardening and MAGC on the third Thursday each month on WCSJ at 9:10 A.M. If you would like to be on the list to be on the radio for MAGC, please call Pam. Pam will give you the information that will be talked about with Kevin. In Morris Area Garden Club, as in gardening, you get out of it what you put into it! So, please come out to the meetings, visit the website - often - it is our *virtual* meeting place; bring friends, bring ideas. Let's make 2011 a strong year for MAGC! Sincerely Yours, Debbie Ritke |
